The first full week of Spring has past and with it marks the beginning of Spring Break for most of the Florida high school runners. Not wanting to miss a chance at good competition, some runners postponed the start of their break to run one of the highly competitive meets this past weekend. The biggest of these meets being the FSU Relays where there were a number of great performances, especially on the distance side. Help us choose the DyeStat FL Performance of the Week by choosing up to 3 of the choices below.
Julia Montgomery Pine Crest, FL: She’s back! At the FSU Relay’s Montgomery missed taking home a victory in both the 3200m and 1600m by a combined time of less than 2 seconds. Running 10:43.16 for 2nd (1st - Rafaella Gibbons 10:42.20) and 5:00.95 for 4th (1st - Gabriell Jennings 4:59.56) Montgomery looks to be back at the top of the 2A distance ranks, after an odd Junior cross country season where she failed to defend her 2013 and 2012 state titles by finishing 8th.
Estero FL girls 4x800 relay: How does one of the most dominant distance programs in the state recover from a down cross country season? By running a FL #1 and US #3 4x800 seemingly out of nowhere. The ladies came in to the FSU Relays with a season best of 9:51 and left with a win in a very quick 9:24.95.
Caitlyn Collier Bolles, FL: The 9th grade distance runner from Bolles, stayed in Jacksonville to run the UNF Spring Break Invitational this weekend while a bunch of her teammates traveled to run at FSU. Running in the 800m, she had the fastest seed time by over 11 seconds. This didn’t seem to matter to her as she managed to win the 800m with a US #5 and FL #1 in a time of 2:11.88.
Antwuan Musgrove Hallandale, FL: The senior from Hallandale had a very good out of state trip to the Texas Relays. Musgrove placed in the top 6 in both the 110m and 300m Hurdles, and managed to capture a few US top marks in the process. In the 110mH Musgrove placed 6th with a 13.86, good enough for a US #7 and FL #3. In the 300mH he placed 3rd in a 36.73, which was a US #3 and FL #1.
Connor Vaughn Wolfson, FL: When looking at the top 5 runners from the 3200m at FSU, there are 4 that really don’t come as much of a surprise. Sukhi Khosla, Franco Martins, James Zentmeyer and Jack Guyton, all 4 with proven track records in both cross country and track. Running in the middle of this group, somewhat a surprise, is Wolfson’s Connor Vaughan. Placing 4th in the 3200 with a time of 9:04.99, Connor is going to be one to keep an eye on as we make our way into the post-season.
Drew McMichael Evangelical Christian, FL: Not all great performances coming out of FSU were from the distance events. Competing in the Pole Vault, Drew McMichael won the event by over a foot with a best height of 16’ 5”. McMichael’s vault landed him a US #9 and FL #1 mark for the event.
Nicole Greene Ponte Vedra, FL: The 2015 NB Indoor National Champion for the high jump has continued her success into the outdoor season. At the UNF Spring Break Invitational, Greene competed and placed in both the high jump and long jump. Greene won the high jump with a very impressive 6’0” which currently is a US #2 and FL #1 mark. She also won the long jump with an 18’ 5” mark.
