With several races during their first high school cross country season, the FROSH state-wide are gaining valuable racing and team experiences.  We're starting to recognize trends and a glimpse into what the future holds.  Next up for these young racers will be the County/Conference meets followed by the State series as they round out their first full season of Sunshine State Cross Country.

Are two honorees this week are presently in the top 5 when we consider times so far this
season and have been impactful for their teams growth as well.

Our Girls Frosh of the Week is Providence's Audrey Woods.

Audrey is no stranger to the world of XC running as she has been under the tutelage of
Coach Jackson at Providence for the last few years and has seen her times steadily
decrease from the mid 23's to the mid 19's during that time-frame.

Coach Jackson: I've had the privilege of coaching Audrey for three years. During that time
I've seen her mature into a dedicated, persevering team leader, always showing up ready to
go 100 percent. She had a great summer of training along with an excellent running camp
experience. I am looking forward to working with Audrey in the future and watching her
fufill her dreams and potential.

Audrey Woods:  This 2015 season began with fun summer training with my team. We ran the
hills at Warrior Running Camp. Off season strength training and core helped me persevere
through several challenging courses and conditions early in the season. Coach Jackson and
Coach Hamel challenge us as a team and as individuals to set high goals that encourage us
to use our God-given gifts as runners. Because of this, we are eagerly anticipating the
culmination of our 2015 season.

Our Boys FROSH of the Week is St. Petersburg's Matthew Wolhwend.

Mathew's season so far has been highlighted by his 16:47 PR and 3rd place finish at the
St. Petersburg City Championships earlier this season.

Coach Cuff: Matthew came to us from St.Pete Christian School and put out some fabulous
times in track so we knew we were getting a fast kid. What we didn't know is how good a
teammate Matthew is. A lot of times it is hard for freshmen to come into a team and be one
of the best. Sometimes upperclassmen can take it hard losing to a freshman. But Matthew
has had a great attitude and established a great relationship with our returning varsity
runners. It has been great having Matthew for our speed work-outs as well. He has pushed
the other varsity runners to run at a faster pace. Matthew's third place finish at the
St.Pete City Championship led the boys to a team championship. I believe with the right
training the next couple years Matthew could win a State Championship before his time is
done.

Matthew Wolhwend : I’ve always been involved in sports, but this is my first season of
cross country training and racing, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  The older guys on my
team have been really good to me, welcomed me into the team right from the start and have
helped me out a lot. Our guys’ team is a great group to train with and it makes the
suffering easier when you do it with your friends.  And we try to make sure we get some
fun into our workouts, like when we do our beach run, an out and back run with a beach
volleyball break in the middle. Our team also has great coaches in Coach Cuff, Coach
Russell and Coach Bartholomew, they know running and really care about us.  I know for
sure I wouldn’t have the results I’ve had in my freshman season without them.  I think our
team gets stronger each week, and I look forward to seeing what we can do the rest of the
season, and the next few years- GO GREEN DEVILS!

subjective. If you wish to nominate your athlete for "Frosh of the Week" please e-mail me
