With 7 nationally ranked teams, state cross-country meet should be exciting

SALT LAKE CITY — Some races will have nationally ranked favorites, while others are wide-open mysteries.

But with seven Utah teams ranked nationally, four of those in the top 10, and two region champs boasting perfect scores, Wednesday’s high school cross-country state championship meet will not lack for drama.

While most coaches don’t expect records to fall like last year, the state’s prep teams continue to produce a significant amount of talent.

“Utah per capita, the quality of teams is really some of the best in the country,” said Skyline head coach Tom Porter. “To have three (boys) teams in the top 10 from a state of 3 million people, it’s pretty remarkable.”
