More Than Teammates

If you’ve ever played a sport, or went to school, you’ll find that you form relationships with different individuals. Some relationships last, and some don’t. Some grow weaker, others grow stronger. Whatever the case may be, the  people that you meet in life leave lasting impressions on you. At the end of the day, it’s not about the people that you start with, but rather who you finish with.

Rivals

Douglas High School seniors Alex Margetts and Anthony Ramcharran met just like most do. Both had an interest in running cross country, and found each other there. However, there were slight tensions between the two.

“At first I thought that he was just another kid coming out,” said Margetts. “Then I saw that he was out there to compete and we began challenging each other to see who could be better.”

Their coach, Justin Boruch, clearly saw the battles and sparks between the two. “They have pushed each other and their teammates to the limit since their freshman year,” he said. Despite the constant battles, Boruch saw foresaw that these two competitive spirits would turn into something great once they maturedand learned how to get along.

Brothers

When you reach your senior year, it’s a time to reflect on all of the things that have happened up to that point. You tend to look at the moments that made you, and those that almost broke you. Some of life’s most simple moments can be the ones that are the most memorable, and ultimately the ones that stay with us forever.

“Crossing the line at our last ever dual meet together was probably the most memorable experience,” said Margetts. “It sort of signified the beginning of something bigger as we headed into the states series and later on into college.”

Ramcharran and Margetts stood at the line of the cross country state meet together for the last time as high school athletes, and possibly, teammates. Despite this possibly being their last time running cross country together, they put that aside and put in the mindset that they’ve ran together since they were freshman, and that wasn’t about to change.

Margetts ran 16:10.20, placing 15th, and Ramcharran ran 16:22.80, placing 25th.

The two would continue their drive together by running at the FACA Senior All-Star meet, and running at the Footlocker South Regional Championships.

At the All-Star Meet, Margetts ran 16:05.61, finishing 12th. Ramcharran ran 16:12.64, finishing 17th.

At Footlocker, Margetts ran 15:55.00, placing 76th, and Ramcharran ran 16:23.00, placing 153rd.

You can throw out times and places, and PR’s and season-bests. The only thing that matters is the bond that these two shared going into every single one of their races.

“We are not only friends, but at this point after four years of pain and work, I consider us brothers,” Margetts expressed. “Every day we count on each other to push one another harder to reach the next level.”

Margetts believes that the bond that him and Ramcharran share will last throughout their future years in the NCAA and into their later lives. Margetts says that he would not be the runner that he is today if Ramcharran hadn’t

been there every step of the way to push him and, in return,  had been able to push him.

“Alex and Anthony have a very strong relationship,” said Boruch. “They are extremely dedicated and competitive. They feed off of each others success and are there for each other in defeat. It's safe to say that without the other they wouldn't be where they are today.”
