Pine Crest's Julia Montgomery sprinted into this cross country season chasing her second consecutive Class 2A individual state championship.

St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore Alexa Cruz badly wanted to win the 4A title after finishing runner-up a year ago.

Both finished first at the state meet in Tallahassee last month, with Montgomery winning the 2A race in a season-best 18:22 and Cruz winning the 4A race in a personal-best 18:02. The sophomores, who gave Broward County multiple girls' winners in the same year for the first time, are co-Runners of the Year.
