Shelby Davidson - 133 Days

Shelby Davidson

To all of those that read my blog, I apologize that I did not get the chance to blog last weekend! It has been 2 very busy, exciting, fun-filled weeks for me and I am thrilled to tell you all about the racing and other interesting things.

First we can start with last weekend, where I raced in the Flrunners.com "Race of Champions". My week of training leading up to this meet I was extremely sore from the Mountain Dew Invite at UF, which I won. It was really hot that day due to the fact that the race went off at 9:45 AM and the course was hilly, so it just wiped me out. On top of that, we had a tough workout that Tuesday and Thursday so I really had no time to recover. I’m also a student in the IB program which is extremely demanding academically, so I was in bed only by 12 PM or 1 PM every night. I’m not trying to justify my 3rd place finish at Flrunners… I’m just saying how difficult that week was.

Regardless, going into the race I knew I had some very talented girls to race against. Just because I had beaten Olivia, Bridget, and Kacy the week before did not mean anything. Anyone can do anything on any given day. So at the race I really ran as well as I could, maintaining a spot in the front pack for the whole race until the last 600 meters when Olivia and Bridget just took off kicking. My legs were so exhausted and I just could not propel them any faster. I ended up running a season best of 17:45 and placing third (my personal best is 17:36 on a cross country course). This was better than my 6th place finish at last year’s meet, so I suppose I was pleased with my race but I went straight back to work the day after.

This marked the merge into my week leading up to the Disney Classic at what is now the ESPN Wide World of Sports. The entire week I had some very solid workouts, and I was able to get much more sleep than the week before. Plus it helped out that we did not have school Friday, because I was able to get about 9 ½ hours of sleep the night before the race. Disney ended up being a very fun race as it usually is, and we normally do it because it’s an exciting and laid back atmosphere for both the JV and Varsity teams.  I basically raced this 5K alone, with a girl from a school up north trailing a little behind me. With about 800 meters to go I got sick of being in cruise control, and decided to pick it up. I got 1st place with an 18:10, and I took home a big Mickey Mouse trophy and a medal. Then to my surprise, my girls team and I placed first! So we got a team Mickey Mouse trophy, and we all got medals. It was truly a great day.

Right after the race ended, I drove home with my parents because I had a big weekend to prepare for: my first official recruiting visit to a college for running! I would tell you where it was to… but that would make the decision process much less exciting. Let’s just say, the college was so much fun and I loved the time that I spent up there! Sadly, it was back to reality today for me as I returned to boring old high school. But I’ve been told to never wish it was over because time really does fly, and I will be into the real world faster than I realize.

My Grandpa also always says education is the number one most important thing you can have in the world, so I guess I can stick it out for the next 133 days of high school. Stay tuned for more running tales, and updates on my college process! Train hard everyone, and happy running.

Editor's Note- Shelby will be keeping a blog for us this year as she is set to improve on a stellar junior year. Last year Davidson was a Footlocker Finalist and has had one of her best summers of her high school career.
