Hi ya, everyone! This Is Noah Perkins from Seffner Christian.  I am coming in as a senior and also as a runner who is ecstatic about the upcoming season (as I'm sure everyone else is)! I've been asked to talk a little bit about how our team's summer has gone, so here we go.

First of all, I would like to thank DyeStatFL.com for letting me post on their site, and for giving me an opportunity to talk about our summer training.  I also want to thank God, who is the one that gave me something to write about in the first place, and my Coach and Family, who have encouraged and pushed me and my teammates through this long, hot summer of endless mileage.

After coming off of an extremely productive track season, our team got a well-deserved break in the off-season, before starting the long, mileage-grinding summer.  But of course, as all other High School runners know, this time is just long enough to make you go crazy over the anticipation of the upcoming cross country season. There's just something about taking a break from training that makes a runner eager to get the legs moving.

We had officially begun our summer training around the beginning of June, starting with considerably low mileage (20-30 miles a week) and adding on 2-3 miles every week.  For us, summer training is more about the mileage, and getting a strong foundation for the upcoming season, so we don't start actual hard workouts until we are about a month into our training.  To build up this foundation, we focus on core workouts after every easy-mileage-day, and a long run (20-30% of weekly mileage) at least once a week.

Coach Holmes makes sure we train on a variety of courses over the summer, so that we are prepared for any and all cross-country races. We usually train on the schools campus, but we also head out to local parks.  This way we not only get a change in terrain (anywhere from hills and sugar sand to flat and asphalt), but we also get a change in scenery.

Speaking of a change in scenery, my family and me went up north twice this year, and I was able to train while on vacation. We went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and also to Grand Rapids, Michigan, both of which had much better running conditions than the Florida humidity. I was able to run on the beach and watch the sunrise when I was at Myrtle Beach, ( FYI, when running barefoot, watch for seashells, it can be a painful realization). At Grand Rapids I was able to run through the city and across the Grand River in sixty-degree weather!  I had a Grand time!

Our team didn't really get going until July due to early bumps in the road such as summer flu, injuries, and vacations. But by the time we were in the middle of July, and were starting tempo runs and fartleks, we really were starting to shape up.  By the time we were through most of July and heading into August, all vacations (including mine) were out of the way and we could focus on our goal as a team; and that is qualifying and winning a podium spot at states.  Our team has never placed better than fourth at state finals, but I think with the talent we have this year that we have a chance at reaching the podium goal.

The last few weeks of summer training (first weeks of August) really put us into the high gear. As we reached the peak of summer mileage, we could peer over and see the races before us and were able to start focusing on improving our racing game.  We ended our summer training with the teams total mileage stretching from 275 miles to 500 miles for each individual. It was a long, hard summer, but we made it and can now focus on the races at hand and see how the season goes.

I'll see you guys in the upcoming season! I wish everyone the best of luck!
